Chameleon Condo. What do you think?

SpiderMonkey Mar 03, 2004 12:19 PM

I saw these just recently in Reptiles magazine and was wondering if anyone with experience with these could give me some information about them. I would like to know people's opinions, the advantages and problems people see with them. Thanks for your time.

I have had the predesessor of the Chameleon Condo for 4 years....it's called the Chameleon CAnopy. The guys who made it went out of business, but it is exactly the same as the Condo. My veiled cam really loves it....lots of vertical space... and my wife likes it because it looks better than a cage. The main weakness is that the drip systm leaks after a while...I replaced the drip system after 3 years with a home-made one that I keep on top of the upper dome. Also, the lighting is basically 3 screw-in fixtures, so you need to ue the ESU Super UVB Coil bulb which is the only screw-in type that will get you the UVB you need, plus a regular 60 watt incandescent for heat.

In 4 years, I've never had a problem with my cham escaping or falling out of the Chameleon Canopy. However, it is important to keep all vines and perches trimmed so they don't extend out over the edge of the bottom bowl. If they fall into the bowl, they hit the slanted sides and it really should be no problem for them. Also, I ordered an accessory that was called a "habitat expander" which is basically a clear, stiff plastic sheet that installed all around the circumference of the bottom bowl and extends the "edge" of the bottom bowl by another 6 " all around. If they fall, they hit this plastic sheet and slide down into the bottom bowl. They then grab the rope and climb back up. I have not had any electrical problems as legendchams describe in 4 years but remember, these are not the same guys who made the Chameleon Canopy, so maybe do their wiring differently. All I know is that my cham really thrives on the Canopy, it looks good and pretty easy to maintain. But it does have it's problems....the leaky drip system is basically unfixable once it starts and is a pain in the ass. BTW, humidity for a veiled is pretty much taken care of by the drip vine and the live plants...the plant roots stay wet all the time and constantly let out evaporated water, and the leaves of the live plants expirate moisture also. It's very easy to get 40% humidity just by running the drip slowly for 4-5 hours per day....about 2 quarts of water(the resevoir holds 1 gallon)

I have two of the Chameleon Condos, I would NOT Recommend them
under any circumstance!!!!!!! For starters the dripers do leak.
The wiring shorted out and almost caught the house on fire.
The next problem is that the chameleons will drop off the condo
and escape. Also there is the worry of injury, if they drop on
a hard surface. I have put my condos in the attic. Get a screen
cage.
