Converting a display case

aplaxco Mar 03, 2004 02:07 PM

My step-dad (in construction) had an opportunity to get some glass display cases for free and kindly brought them to me to see if we can use them for some of our snakes. These things are pretty cool. They have a melamin floor, and the rest of the walls are glass with sliding/locking glass doors. The demensions are 4'x2'x16". A little heavy but manageable with two people. I think I could convert it to a cage but I am worried about ventilation. Anybody have any suggestions?

The top is glass too. I was thinking I might be able to replace one of the sliding doors with screen instead of glass.

I found out last night that the top piece of glass does pop out of the frame so I could replace it with something for ventilation. If I replace the door instead I will have to use silicon or something to seal the top on. I was thinking if I replace the top glass it will lighten the whole unit considerably. Any suggestions?

Definately take the top off. Then you can replace it with all screen or just a part of the spring.

I personally wouldn't replace one of the doors with screen. I would replace the top with a sheet of plywood, or pvc plastic. Does the display have sliding doors on both the front and back? if so you can remove the back doors and insert a piece of plastic or plywood with ventilation holes in it as well as the top being replaced..

Good luck with your setup..

I mostly keep corns but we are planning on getting a Dumeril boa who would probably go in one of the cases as a juvie. I think a Dumeril would outgrow the set up but it's a nice size for an adult corn or I can split on in half for younger corns.

There are only sliding doors on one side but I think I am going to try to make a new top for them instead of trying to mess around with the sliding doors.

If you did replace the top with plywood or PVC how would you seal it to the frame? There is a small lip that the glass used to sit on.

If the measurements are 4' long by 2' deep by 16" high that enclosure will house a dumerils for its entire life. More then enough room. As far as fastening the top on I would cut it to fit the exact size of the lip and use silicone to adhere it in place, you could also make supports to stand in the corners to help support the plywood top. Just cut them to the appropriate height, adhere them into the corners with silicone, and run a screw into the supports through the top of the plywood sheet.

Good luck with it, they sound like they will make great display enclosures.
