Shamelss plug for Reptile Relief snake mite killer

markg Mar 03, 2004 02:49 PM

Just thought I'd pass this experience on..

I adopted a beautiful sub-adult corn knowingly with mites. After manually soaking the snake to remove as many visible mites as possible, I did one treatment with Reptile Relief that I bought from Petsmart for this emergency (didn't have time to wait for a shipment of Provent-a-Mite). I also wiped down the cage with the stuff. Amazingly, it is 4 weeks later and still no mites from just the one treatment. I used paper towels as substrate during this time to make it easier to see any mites should they re-appear.

Apparently the solution dissolves the exoskeleton of the mite and destroys the eggs as well, so it isn't a poison persay, although it can irritate any mucous membrane lined area, so don't get it in the snake's mouth. nostrils or eyes.

Does anyone know the length of time for mite eggs to hatch? (i.e. does 4 weeks clean mean that reinfestation is unlikely from hatching mite eggs that may be in the room?)

Four weeks is enough for a couple of generations of mites. But I'd wait two months total before declaring yourself a mite-free zone. Hope it worked, though.
