Caging tips...

krystal19_85 Mar 03, 2004 03:37 PM

I am seriously contimplating geting a group of leos, I have read up on them quite a bit. My questions are about the caging, I was wondering on tips on how to make the cage visually appealing, but still easy to clean, I know slate tile, will probably use a couple pieces of that, but I know astroturf is bad, but is there something that is as easy to care for, but that dosen't have the negatives of astorturf, but it still nice and natural looking? Also PLEASE give me any tips you have on making a visually appealing, but that meets all the needs of a leo, I am open to all omments, even the bad ones. These will b purely pets, I was going to breed ball pythons, but I had a lifestyle change and I just can't do it, but I am keping a couple as pets and I want some leos too. I also need to know what size tank is too much for a group or 3-4 leos. Thanks a bunch in advance!

why dont you like the astro turf?

if i was going to make a viv. with all fake/dead stuf this is what i would do.

Get some of the tan astroturf as a substrate
get a bunch of fake desert plants place those in the cage
get a large water bowl and have fake vines covering parts of it
make some flower pot base hides and have a good artist paint them in a savvana theme
go to the local garden store and get some dried/dead long grasses
sterilzie those
scatter those along the floor
get a savanna style background

Astroturf is supposed to be bad with fraying and harboring bacteria. Thanks though you do have some good ideas.

I’m not sure if you saw my post below, it has some pictures of my larger tanks, maybe they will give you some ideas.

The general rule of thumb is 10 gallons of tank per adult leo, so 3-4 leos would be comfortable in a 30-40 gallon tank. If you do decide on getting leopards, I’m sure you will come to love them as much as the rest of us do. Just be extra prepared, before bringing your little one(s) home. Best of luck!

How many Leos do you keep in each tank that big? They are very practical, but I was going for a more display look. Thanks for the rule of thumb trick, I guess that helps alot, but would it stress the leos out if the cage was say a 50 gallon long tank with 4 leos? I figured it wouldent be bad with a few hides and things of that sort. I am pretty set on if I get anything it will be loes. I am sure I will love them, when I was going o breed my BPs I was also looking into breeding leos so I did ALOT of reading on them, but I am brusing up again since it has been a little while. Thanks for the help! Krystal

>>How many Leos do you keep in each tank that big? They are very practical, but I was going for a more display look.

The first tank is currently home to 5 females, I’ve had as many as 6 in there. The second, shorter tank has 8 juvenile females. I’m sure a 50 long will hold 4 adult leos just fine, with plenty of room for them to do their thing. Keep us posted on how your tank comes together, and on the search for leos.
