Half a tail missing

HerpHelmz Mar 03, 2004 03:40 PM

Today I got 2 CB turtles from this year, a Western Painted Turtle and what looks to be a Cooter. Never-the-less, the Painted has half of it's tail missing, and the Cooter has no tail, just a stub, but they are both healthy, active and eating. What are the consquences of not having tails? This has really never happened to me before.

I dont know how much it will affect your turtles, but I had 2 common snapping hatchlings who had their tails bitten off by a 2" RES. One had half a tail and the other almost none. By not having one with a complete tail I cant speculate normal growth, but the half tail was twice the size of the no tail after 1 year. I traded off the half tail and kept the runt for a couple more years. Common Snappers of course have much longer tails and use them for balance so they were at more of a disadvantage than I think a basking turtle would be.
