No tails

HerpHelmz Mar 03, 2004 03:45 PM

Today I got 2 CB turtles from this year, a Western Painted Turtle and what looks to be a Cooter. Never-the-less, the Painted has half of it's tail missing, and the Cooter has no tail, just a stub, but they are both healthy, active and eating. What are the consquences of not having tails? This has really never happened to me before.

They probly got their tails bitten off by another tank mate, it should not be a problem. Is it a fresh wound, or is it healed?

It's healed. I can't exactly tell but the turtle seems to not have a colaca(hope I spelled that right). I'm guessing that would affect alot, including breeding, and even "going to the bathroom" is it possible for it to survive without a colaca?

Were you informed that thes turtles you bought weregoing to have this tail nip.
Its more than standard to advertise this when trying to sell and animal. Itowuld be considered a pretty bad mark for adealer to sell you an animal with a tail nip and not have informed you before hand.

As far as the turtle itself goes:
is there blod or exposed tissue?
any fungus?
I would keep them in super clean water (change daily in small container) and possible cosnider dry docking and applying nolvasan.
Are these turtles hatchlings?

HerpHelmz Mar 05, 2004 02:12 PM

The turtles are hatchlings, they are both old wounds from a few months ago. The one with no tail, that I have identified to be a Redbelly Turtle hasn't eaten anything since I got it, unless it ate something when I wasn't looking. The place where I got them from, the guy didn't want to sell 2 turtles with no tails, so he sent them to me cause he knew I wouldn't mind.

okay so you knew.
One is a northern red bellied turtle?
what foods have you tried? have small live worms and escarole been on the list?
have you been able to id the other turtle?

HerpHelmz Mar 06, 2004 12:26 PM

One of them is some kind of Redbelly Turtle, the other one is a Western Painted Turtle. The Painted has eaten everything I tried to give it, chipped ham, rosies, turtle food, worms and it even tried to take my baby Map Turtle's leg, lol I stopped that though. The Redbelly had all of those options and it didn't take anything.

I got pics of them basking and as soon as I get them developed I'll post them so someone can correctly identify what SSP the Redbelly Turtle is.
