Hello!

Crotaphytuskidd Mar 03, 2004 05:29 PM

Hi all.

I'm new to this board, and I wanted to introduce myself.
My name is Phil Clevinger, and I love all lizards,
but mainly ones I can find here in the Mojave Desert.
Right now I have 1 sub adult male Chuck that I found at a local
mountain last March. He made it through hibernation,
so I'm looking forward to sharing some good stories with you
as it warms up. So with that, hello!

PS Is there a name for the locality of CA
Chucks in the Apple Valley/Barstow area?
I mean like "Arizona Redback", or "Carrot-Tail"
If anyone knows, I'd appreciate a hit-up.

Herpetologically,
Phil Clevinger

Dr Montanucci tagged those Mojave speckled. I guess technically they are a redback with not much red. They are Sauromalus obesus obesus. He is probably black with a little red or orange speckling more pronounced down the spine almost looking like a stripe but maybe not. He has a tan tail. This is adult color and he may not have it yet since you said he is young. All mainland chuckwallas will officially be Sauromalus ater come the end of the month. Glad you joined the forum. Tom

Hello.

Thanks for the info.
Mojave Speckled eh? Nice ring to it.
The description you provided
matches my young fellow.
Based on previous posts on age/size differences,
I'd say he's around a little under 2 years.
At least I'll have had him
for a year in April. Still has banding on his
tail, but only on certain days.
Marker of a juvie isn't it? Well
thanks. You've been very helpful. Look forward to
talking Chucks and DI's in the future.
