Business Question

kyleolover Mar 03, 2004 05:50 PM

I am curious about the process of going from a hobby to a business. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am currently breeding only leopard geckos and not a huge amount either. I hope to expand soon but I just hit a mental block. I would like suggestions on tax information as well as keeping my leos space savvy without all the racks and impersonal designs. Thanks in advance..

i dont breed leos yet but i know a lot about business (but yes i am 13). Keeping the leo space savy isn't going to do well unless you use racks. You might be able to make multilevel cages but they will cost a lot more money than racks. Also if the business is going to succeed you better have good geckos, awesome marketing, and lots of willing buyers. Lots of full time leo breeders barely break even. If you want to breed any herps for a business and you dont have a website you will lose lots of money. also who are you selling to? a pet store isn't going to buy a SHT/SHCT/SHTCT or any other morph that is over $50 because they wouldn't have anyone buying. Neither is a 10-12 year old kid who wants a pet lizard. Remember just because people are willing to buy a gecko for $500 doesn't mean a little kid is going to pay more than $50 on it. I helps to have variety so you can sell to a multitude of buyers (kids, petstores, breeders, herpers, etc).

agree but take your time get alot of experience. my sis tried to go form nothing to a full time breeder and it didnt work. just keep breeding for small cash now and get what u need then expand. not all ta once. and yea racks are by far the easiest way to go.

Good luck if you want to avoid rack systems AND you want to expand. I can clean five bins from my racks to every simple tank - longer for a fancy tank. Everyone gets cleaned thoroughly every third day. If you want to keep a number of animals and still have a life, you will need to think about racks.
