How to get to feed FT...

roachey56 Mar 03, 2004 06:18 PM

i am going to try to get my BP to eat a FT mouse tommorrow. It refused a FT last week but it was only 5 days after its last feeding and it hadn't defecated (it later defecated on me and my bed). I was wondering what ways should i try to get felix to eat a FT. what way have you had most success with?

Hi,

Well thats the million dollar question! A lot of people try several different things that work but this is what I do (and please dont take this like it is the only way to try). What we do is always feed live off tongs. This way the snake will associate the food off the tongs. On the day you are going to try the F/T there are several options:

1) feed a live food item that is smaller then the usual sized food item. Gotta pay close attention about what is happening because shortly after the snake swallows and align its jaw I will dangle the F/T item on the tongs. The idea here is that the snakes feeding response will take over and it will eat. Over time you will try without the live food and the snake will be switched over.
2) Another option is to try and feed F/T on tongs without the live food items. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.
3) Finally what works for some of my snakes is to leave it in overnight. There are only some snakes that will take it this way but it is always an option.

There are also several ways to prepare the F/T food. I take it out of the freezer about 8 hours before I am going to feed it. This will allow the F/T food to thaw thoroughly. I then use a heat lamp to heat the food up to about 95-100 degrees. Some snakes like it hotter some like it cooler. (Remember that by the time you get it to the snake it will loose heat).

I have heard you can put chicken broth on the food item and it will stimulate the snake but that has never worked for me. Well I hope you can use some of this information. If you have any other questions about my feeding methods please feel free to mail me. Good luck!
