One difference: all pythons lay eggs, most boas give live birth

Pythons are old world (Asia, Africa, Australia) species, and boas are new world (Americas).

Pythons are old world (Asia, Africa, Australia) species, and boas are new world (Americas).

Actually there are
- 10 species of sandboa (Eurasia and Africa)
- 3 species of Madagascan Boa (Madagascar)
- 2 species of Round Island Boas (although 1 is extinct)
- 3 or 4 species of Pacific Island Boas (Candoia sp.) (New Guinea to Fiji)
- if you count Calabaria as a boa (as most people do) that is another from Africa

So, just off the top of my head, that makes 20 species of Old World boids. I am sure I am overlooking some others as well.

Now there aren't any new world Pythonine snakes (Loxocemus isn't really a python in spite of its common name), so that part holds true.
