If you don't mind doing it over amphibians, look into the topic of poison dart frog toxins. That topic usually perks people's ears up!

Depending on your source material requirements and required paper length, you might be able to do something about the exotic wildlife trade. There are lots of debates out there about whether it should exist at all, and if so with what limitations (if any). Sustainable harvest of wild populations, ranching/farming, export bans, CITES, federal/state/local regulation, etc. are all included in the general topic.

Unfortunately, there's not much in the peer reviewed scientific literature on the subject as it relates specifically to herps, but there is some, and there's even more floating around on the internet. If you broaden the topic to all exotic wildlife trade for the pet industry and for other markets (think hides and other animal products) the topic gets even broader.

If you want to do this I have a resource on it being an inherited trait. Well, not inherited per se, but a fear that is much more easily learned than other fears because of inherited predispositions. So we're not born with it, but it's easier to become afraid of snakes than it is of easy chairs or caesar salads.
