Found a Dying Savanna

ReticDragon8 Mar 03, 2004 07:00 PM

I'm desperately in need of some help!!! I work at a pet store and someone dropped of a dying 3ft savanna monitor. It won't eat and it's very skinny. i can see its spine and its hips are starting to show. it also looks like its missing its left eye. i feel sorry for the animal and i don't want it to die, so i'm going to take it to a vet, but i don't have much money. is there much hope for it? how can i make it comfortable until i get him to the vet? i want to save the poor monitor and give it a good life. help me help him!!!

See the vet a.s.a.p., keep him warm, and soak him in water to rehydrate. You can try offering foods but if he is that weak then it may not eat.

Seeing the vet is the first and foremost thing though. After that bring him home to a good cage setup. cool end can be as low as the 60's warm end 90, basking site 130 . Can use cypress mulch or dirt as substrate. Off plenty of hides and keep up with the soaking routine until you see improvment.

good luck

my leo had the same problem... take to vet it probably has worms of some sort. they gave me a med which was pretty hard getting into her mouth, but i got it in (oral). i also changed from crickets to mealworms because of a bad shed covering her left eye, therefore not being able to catch the fast crix.

try pouring water on the eye and using a paper towel to roll the skin off. then get more water underneath the skin and use cotton swabs and tweezers. may take more than one person. use some tough love. it will NOT be easy

as for food give it something that is slow but moves and will not harm the lizard. maybe kingworms in a bowl

Becareful with dewormer at the savs age. Read up on what your vet wants to give him/her. I have had bad experiences with dewormer and older monitors. It doesn't seem to effect them the same when they are babies as it does when they are adults.
