Sexing Cresteds

birdhead1982 Mar 03, 2004 10:00 PM

Hi, I have a male crested, and it's pretty obvious. But i have had these two others for a few months now and they seem considerably smaller than the male (about 6 1/2 in.) head to tail. My guess is that they are at least 6 months old. When do you think i can just assume that they are females?

You can normally determine sex on a crested gecko within four months. Males obviously have the hemipenil bulge and the small white spurs on the side of their tales. If you cresteds are older than four months, and it sounds like they are due to their size, I would say it is safe to say that they are female.

I dont give a 100 positive on sex until 9 months. I have had males drop hemipenis at 7/8 months when I thought all along they were female. I have some adult females with spurs longer than some males. I also have 250-300 baby geckos in the last year and I wish I could determine sex younger than I do now, but I use magnifying glasses, spur method, and size method all with a 50/50 chance of getting it right.
