Old Shed

Priest Mar 03, 2004 11:18 PM

My Beardie has a lot of old shed on him. It is completely intact, but it’s darker than his older color. He started to shed about… 2 weeks ago? Maybe a bit less, and I saw all of his tail come off, as well as 2 of his feet. His head pealed off at the end and I thought he was done. The color is darker than his tail and feet, but up to a few days ago, the transition from new to old was seamless. Anyway, what can I do to get rid of it? I mist him at least 2 times a day. Any help would be great

Thanks,
Joe

Give him a soak in a tub and scrub him down with an old toothbrush. That should get it off.

I got an excellent suggestion from some of the "herpers" here on how to remove unshed skin. Put a coat of Vaseline on the problem area, and let it sit for a few days (I know, sounds dangerous, don't it?). After about two-three days, the skins peels itself off faster than a banana. This is mostly for extremities and back/belly, it should not be used for the head or neck area where a beardie can lick at it and get sick. My BD had a really bad place on his tail that wouldn't shed right, almost to the point where it was going to start cutting off circulation. An application of Vaseline and heat lamp for a few days solved the problem.

Sounds like a good idea. Would a water based lubricant, like KY, do the same thing without the risk if ingested?

I can't see why not. And it would definitely be safer on the BD. Although, I don't know if KY would be more effective than Vaseline. Someone will have to try that...

Although the repercussions to admitting that "you've been lubricating your "dragon" with KY a few nights a week..." just BEGS for a humorous response...
