A lot of paint stores offer some nice smaller rollers that make perfect hooks. The handles are longer, and the hook shape smaller (about 4-6"
. You may sacrifice the strength that you would get from a club, but if you only want to lift snakes with it, you would be fine. Lindsay Pike also showed me, they work pretty well for flipping boards...at least a few times

Your best bet would be to take the golf club (putter) to a machine shop, and have them grind the end down flat. I have a friend that did this, and it worked great as a snake stick and rock flipper. They shouldn't charge too much to simply grind the putter flat.
