Good luck with that carmel male! I can not wait to see the green ghost/ carmel combo! Owning a comparable green ghost myself, seeing the double homo offspring of green ghost and carmel albino is very exciting for me. Good luck with the double hets!

The male green ghost I own looks stunningly like your girl with the carmel there. If you are interested in any kind of breeding loan with him, let me know. This season I have no females old enough to go for him, and he is at 800g, producing plugs.

The girl I got from you in November is at 500 grams now. I do not have another ball that eats like her!!! Not to mention her sweetheart personality. I am very excited about the possibilities I will have with her.

Again, good luck on that carmel/ghost pairing. I can't wait to see the differance between NERD's orange ghost/ carmel and the green/yellow ghost combo. What I really think the green ghosts will excel at is making "true ghosts" with axanthics. Good luck!

Who cares about Christmas anymore? It's all about ball pythin hatching season!!!

Here is a photo of a pair of Hypomelanistic (Ghost) Balls that are in our collection (this picture is over a year old). The male (larger of the two) is a Bell Line "Butterscotch" and the female is a captive hatched Ghanan baby.

We are hoping that these two animals are compatible. As the female has grown up, she has exhibited nearly the exact coloration of the male. She is currently gravid... We are keeping our fingers crossed!

I could really use plenty of Hypos to hold back... it would be extremely dissapointing to get all Normals that are Double Het. for 2 types of Hypomelanism!

Thanks...

That male is awesome!!

I have been surprised at how compatible different types of ghosts are in my own breedings, my guess (if it counts at all) is that those two will produce some killer hypos.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the compliments!

Oh... and YES... your guess DOES count!! I had a conversation about Hypo compatibility with Colette Sutherland in Daytona last year. Previous to this conversation I felt pretty good... until Colette told me that she bred 2 nearly identical Hypos together and produced NORMALS! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH... Thanks Colette... I didn't need to hear THAT!!

Time will tell...

Thanks,

So basically it is hit or miss with ghosts? I was considering purchasing a het ghost male in hopes of getting a female later, but even if I get a female your saying that it will be necessary for me to get a female from the same lineage as the male or I may not produce ghosts?

thanks

How much incompatibility has been found between proven captive bred lines vs. imports?

I think several years ago Graziani bred a bunch of imports together and didn't get ghosts. I'm wondering if some of the imports that look like ghosts might not be genetic at all. Wouldn't that suck, especially since the imported ghost hatchlings often aren't discounted much at all (I think I’ve even seen them listed at a premium as “fresh blood”). Just speculation, I haven't heard of any import ghosts not proving, just the one case of some possibly not being compatible with other ghost lines and it got me wondering if other incompatibility cases involved unproven imports.

Exotics by Nature Mar 04, 2004 02:25 PM

... but as I remember, Greg Graziani only bred a pair together that were incompatible. I have also heard of other breeders having the same "luck" over the years however I had always heard that the "Hypo" animals that were being bred together were not all that similar in appearance! For example, a "green" Hypo x "orange" Hypo breeding yielding normals is not all that surprising to me. You?

Basically, my security has come from the similarities in the two animals in the photo above! As that female grew, she showed the same color changes as my male did several years before!

Maybe you remember Joe Compel's AWESOME clutch of Hypos last season? Joey's animals were both CH imports that were unrelated. What a clutch! BTW Joe... if you are reading this... you better hope I have the same luck or I won't be your friend anymore Just Kidding... you're a great guy!!!

I would certainly like to hear from some of the other breeders with Hypos (Ghosts)...

Tell us YOUR stories of incompatibilty... more photos would be great too!!

Thanks!!

I'm just afraid that it will be hard to get many stories on incompatibility. For some reason many people seem to take any failure personally. And of course this could be a touchy subject for anyone cherry picking ghosts from the CH crop (I suppose most are picked out in Africa these days). I would still suspect that most CH “Ghosts” are indeed genetic I’m just not sure that all are 100%.

I didn't get all the details from Greg but I seem to remember him having a large group of imported ghosts (like 3.4 or something like that) and I think produced a lot of eggs from the various pairings. He did report producing 6 ghosts (not sure if from these imports but suppose that was implied).

On the other hand, I know of a nice looking ghost female that reportedly slipped through a pet store as an undetected CH (maybe they just thought it was in shed, or maybe that story was BS) and was later paired with a genetic male from a proven line and produced ghosts.

I'm sure you have an excellent chance of those two being compatible Sean. I'm just wondering if there could be some non-genetic causes of ghost looking animals, perhaps similar to whatever is causing some normals to suddenly turn axanthic looking.
