TALKED TO A VET TODAY, NEED SOME ADVICE...more

bmills Jun 10, 2003 04:01 PM

I called a vet that sees leos, and asked if they would do a fecal examination because one of my leos has runny poop. They told me that they just de-worm them, so I should bring in my leos and just get them de-wormed, they don't even check the fecal. It's $20 a piece, and I have 3 leos, and then $35 for the office, call, so $95 dollors! I think that is a little high, and I was curious if anybody had any thoughts, or if that is a normal price. ANY AND ALL ADVICE AND THOUGHTS ARE WELCOME.

first off, if you request a fecal, they should be able to do one for you. they may only just worm them but a fwcal can give them an idea what to worm for. different parasites require different worming medications. as far as the cost, thats about right. i would be more worried about if you vet actually knows what he is doing as far as reptiles. wanting to worm without a fecal? runny stoll can be signs of other illness, now Generally it is due to parasites but not all the time. either insist you want fecals run on the animals to find out exactly what is causing the problem, find another vet or let them worm your animal without knowning what is actually wrong. i personally would go with the first or second choice

If your vet refuses to do a fecal exam, get a new vet.

Only an exam can tell you what types of parasites are involved, if any, so that you'll know how to properly treat them. For example, panacur is the choice for worms, whereas flagyl is proper for protozoal infections. If there are no parasites, administering a toxic wormer to an animal that may already be ill due to other causes is a BAD idea.

i agree don't do anything until, you get a fecal done, because sometimes, their stools can look a little runny. The problem is when they look runny all the time.

My main concern (aside from what's already been mentioned) is the idea of bringing geckos in to be dewormed just once. AFAIK, at least for parasites when treating with panacur, the dosing schedule is once a week for somewhere around 2 to 4 weeks. One dose probably wouldn't cure anything completely.

I'd shop around for a new vet, one that would actually do a fecal, and knows how to administer drugs to a reptile.

I thank you all...I will get a hold of another vet and see what he says. There are only 2 vets in the area that do leos, so I have one more to check. I thought it was weird that he wouldn't do a fecal and just de-worm. Thanks agian, I will keep you updated.

I have another leo in with the one with runny stool, and that leo is fine, so if it is worms shouldn't it or can it transfer? I would think they would both have it...but only one. Does this shed any light on what it might be.
