Need a snake idea/recommendation...

Tigergenesis Mar 04, 2004 09:05 AM

I plan to get my Ball Python a new Boaphile cage. That will leave his 50 gallon breeder tank empty. I was thinking of putting a corn in there, but thought I'd see if anyone had any other suggestions. I'd like a low humidity species that would utilize the climbing branches and not get as thick as a ball - probably not thicker than a corn. Any other ideas other than a corn?

Maybe check out a carpet python of some sort. Irian Jaya Carpets rarely exceed 5.5-6 feet in length, jungles are usually no longer than 7 feet. Carpet pythons are slim snakes and even one seven feet long wouldn't be as thick or weigh as much as a large adult BP. They readily use climbing branches. Also, they are generally good feeders. I know mine is a little pig . Humidity reqs seems to depend on who you talk to. I've read some caresheets where the author keeps their carpets in the same conditions as their ball pythons. I spray my CCP's cage every other night and twice a day when i notice she is starting to shed.

I suppose i'm kind of biased so maybe a milk, or other colubrid would be better b/c of reqs.

for info on carpet pythons, try anthony caponetta's excellent site http://www.acreptiles.com/carpet_python_care.htm

I do love the carpets, but the humidity in the tank will be more like 20-30%. I'm able to keep it up for my ball python, but i don't want to have to do that anymore. That's one reason I'm getting him a new cage.

Thanks for the idea!

I have a Jungle Carpet Python and mine does well with just a large bowl of water. When she goes into shedding then I mist her and the tank every other day or so till she sheds. Otherwise I don't really mist her. She eats well on small rats.
I wanted a longer snake then corns but not big like a redtail boa or bermese python. They are to big for me. Jungle Carpet's might get 6-7 foot but are slim so handling them will be ok with one person.
I've read baby JCP are nippy but I got mine at a reptile store and she was a yearling. So she is over the nippy stage. She is docile with handling. I love the yellow and black color of the JCP.

I think a good choices are corns, milks,
(pits)gophers/bull/pines, and kings they are all about the same size plus or minus a foot great colors on all of them. kings and milk a little more active then pits and corns.

I seriously considered them, but got the impression their humidity needs would be more like the Ball Python's - which is one reason he's getting a new cage.

Again the humidity in the tank would be 20-30% maybe up to 40% in summer. Am I right that this is too low for them?

Spotted and Childrens pythons require low humidity. I live in Arizona where the ambient humidity is already low. My Childrens Python is in a tank with an under tank heater on one side. There is a small water dish in the tank, and that is the only thing that would increase the humidity. I was told not to provide a humid hide box. My snake never has any difficulty shedding.

Thank you so very much - I'll look into them more as well. I really love the Cape York Spotted Pythons.
