my new mouse colony

rttlrvenom Mar 04, 2004 11:54 AM

these are the mice i picked up yesterday. there just a small colony for my few snakes. the white one is a male and the brown and cream are females. The females my have been pregnent when i bought them. If i leave the male in with them do you think he will kill the pinkies if the females are pregnant.

The females certainly don't look pregnant, unless they are in their first week of gestation. I would leave them all together for now. In a week check the females and see if they are becoming more rounder around the hips. If not, there is a good chance they were not pregnant when you bought them. I would just leave the male in with them and see if he does decide to eat the young. Otherwise, it would mean isolating the male for 4 - 6 weeks till the babies are weaned. It is much harder reintroducing a male once females have young babies, the females will attack him as an intruder. So, my advice would be to keep the male in and even if he does wind up killing all the young, in three weeks you will have more babies, and by the time these are weaned or close to it, the females will be giving birth to a new batch.

One other thing, what is that green stuff in the bedding?

I was wondering about the little holes I see on the side of their enclosure. Does this mean you have a solid top that goes on there? Is yes, I would suggest more air flow. Perhaps a screen top of some kind. And they will chew on those holes if they can reach them.

Just food for thought

this isnt there usual cage i have them in a 10 gallon with a sreen top. i just used that because it kept them in a smaller area, there fast little buggers and really hard to keep still to take a shot of.
