Just an idea.................

CDieter Mar 04, 2004 01:19 PM

I am just batting around a few thoughts today(slow day), humor me.

I'm wondering if any forum crocophiles and lurkers would be interested in a bi-monthly/quarterly 'newsletter' regarding keeping crocodilians in captivity.

Basically I'm thinking basic newsletter, message page, how to, species profiles, etc. But an open forum for folks to present enclosure designs, plans, regimens, etc. Similiar to what 'Varanid News' was a few years back. A basic 'how to' resource to keep in a file.

Is it a hair brained idea of an ovecast Thursday or does it have some merit?

Myself I really enjoy seeing how other people keep their charges. In my study and travel I have at times been simply amazed at the ingenuity of people. Some folks can make the simplest things into remarkably functional designs.

Sounds like a great idea! I think that PDF format would also be the best way to go. Keep us posted...

i think its a great idea and going alone with the messagelike theme....having one for each type of crocodilian would be neat. like information on a different kind each week. i'd love to read about some that don't get mentioned much. i don't know..just adding to the idea....

I'm thinking purely about the captive care aspect as it pertains to the average keeper.

As an example.....Chris, i.e. the beserker......visited me a few weeks back. He had some awesome plans for an indoor enclosure. He also came up with a great inexpensive heater. It is this material which would make a great quarterly newsletter that could be nicely done, inexpensively and be filed in a binder to have a pretty good resource of great ideas that could be put int place by private keepers.

I put some in my book in the past, a few will probably make it into the new book. But the problem with books is often they become stagnant quickly. I update mine every year or 2 to try and overcome this as new ideas present themselves. A newsletter gets info out faster.

The thing that always works against these endeavors is contributions need to come from alot of sources. I'd be willing to get it printed or copied and started, but we'd need contributions from around the globe to sustain it.

I don't imagine we'd have a big circulation maybe 100 tops.

we can call it the 'Crocodilian Chronicle' or something

We'll see.

Need more opinions.

I would suggest distributing the newsletter via email using the Abode PDF file format.

John,

Thats a great idea. Now if someone could please tell my near computer illiterate self how to do said feat we may be on to something.

Is it as simple as saving it as a PDF file?

No, saving a file with the .PDF extension doesn't place the file in the PDF format. To produce PDF files you'll need Adobe Acrobat or other software capable of generating PDF files.

I have been producing a mag/newsletter for about 3 years using Quark, Photoshop and Acrobat.
