3-Horned Chameleons

Lucas Jun 10, 2003 04:47 PM

At the local pet shop there are chameleons that are labeled as 3-horned chameleons and I'm just wondering if this is a true species of chameleon. The males have obviously 3 horns and the females dont and they all have a flap at their neck. Thanks for any feedback.

You have the following choices:
Are they brown?
C. wernerii (but female has one horn)
C. fuelleborni (hornless females and have "ear flaps"

Are they green?
C. jacksonii Xanthalophus
C. deremensis (hornless females and have "ear flaps"

remote possibility
C. Johnstonii (have not been imported for a while)

It is not this one!
C. owenii (stresses when exposed to air. Don't try this one at home)

Check www.adcham.com under these species names and you'll be able to figure out what you were looking at.

As far as I know, johnstons have not been imported to the US since last year. They are still bouncing around here, but the chances are slim that they would show up in a pet store here unless they are fresh imports. As not everyone notifies me of when they plan on importing chameleons a shipment with johnstons may have made it in. But if the chameleons have "flaps" on them then they would not be johnstonii. But you bring up a good point. I just assumed Lucas was in the US. He could easily have been in the UK or Uganda. So my message discounting johnstonii should hve been on the basis of the lack of "flaps" and not because of importation status...

Hahaha, yeah, that sounds like oweni. I wish a just a couple of these were still coming into the states (well, I saw a half-dead one come in mislabeled as a C. dilepis from Nigeria about six months ago)! Maybe one day I'll get to try my hand with these guys again. I think I know what I could do to improve my chances. I would also really love if a decent shipment of xenos would come in! The last shipment sucked! All my attempts to keep any stock alive past a week failed!

Thanks
Justyn
