I wish I could help you out with the breeding, but I don't think I'll be giving that a try for several years yet. I'm a junior in high school and money is always a bit tight. I must agree that these are great snakes though. Here's two pictures of mine (I've had him for several months now).

Wes

AWESOME! Where did u find this one? They dont sell them in pet stores here because they are supposidly too "mildly venemous" to sell to the gen public?
I have a western now and love him to death! They are so neat.
I know that the Madagascar ones are not really in the same family as the N. American hognose... but still i've been looking to get one for quite some time. Thanks and awesome snake!

I have a male and it's a "sweetheart". Looks just like the photos in this thread. It always eats and is not fussy about food items. Thawed frozen, live, whatever. I would like to get a female and attempt to breed them. In an attempt to conform to the laws of New York state about registering venomous snakes, I asked them if the Giant Madagascar hognose, the speckled hognose and the checkered gartersnake needed to be registered. They sent me the registration forms. My venomous snake permit arrived listing all 3 snakes. What a great bunch of politicians.

The local town couldn't belive I was registering a gartersnake.

Hi,

I bought mine at one of the regular Hamburg, PA shows just a couple months ago (it's great to have such a big show within 45 mins of my house). I got him for what I considered to be a really good price too, $50. I too had been wanting one for awhile, but he was a bit of an impulse buy. What I really wanted was a few of those Haitian dwarf boas, but didn't want to deal with anole feeding. Back on topic, the guy I bought him from told me he was captive bred although I'm doubtful. He has what appears to be a little scar tissue on his back right behind his head (still a beautiful snake) and he had the habit of striking anytime my hand or snake hook reached in the cage. He has calmed down a lot since then.
There is a large pet store in my area that has actually carried some Madagascar hogs before. If memory serves me correctly, it was a Leioheterodon geayi. Appropriately, it was labeled rear-fanged. You never know with rear-fangs. Heterodon shouldn't be anything to worry about, but Leioheterodon I'd be cautious. Taxonomically Madagascar hognoses, and the rest of Madagascar's colubrids (correct me if I'm in error), are closer related to elapids than they are to American hognose. Anyway, good luck with your search for a Madagascar hog.

Wes

My male and female, hopefully successfully breeding for the second year.

Bob, the first hatchling from last year. Here he's just a few minutes old, and already trying to flare his neck. Cutest snake ever.

My male and I.

I got my pair from Dennis Desmond, the guy at www.hognose.com. He had already cooled the pair before I got them, so it was egg time before I realized she was gravid. They have been cuddling up like this a few times a few weeks ago. Hopefully more eggs are comming.

Awesome snakes. Good luck with them. For much info, go to hognose.com.
