My son and I are interested in getting into JCPs. We have had experience with king and corn snakes so this will be a change for us. We have a 75 gallon tank that measures 48x18x20 and another tank measuring 55x36x15. Will these be sufficient for adult JCPs? We live in the Central Texas Area, are there any breeders locally anyone knows about? We really decided we loved these snake when we found one at a local pet shop, the poor thing had a respiratory infection and wasn't very healthy. We have been on the VPI web site and the pics there are just beautiful, I've never ordered a snake through the internet though, any advice is appreciated. Also, my son wants to try to breed them for a 4H project so we might want to find an older pair. We have done a few months worth of research but please tell us anything else you think we ought to know. THanks.

They sound great! Give /em a hide box and perhaps a branch to perch on if the mood hit them and you should be good to go! What will you be using for heat? Its always great to meet people who do their homework. THANK YOU!

Unfortunately I know lots of keepers but no one that I'd recomend thats breeding. You may want to keep an eye on the KS classifieds if your interested on getting a pair of adults. Just make sure you ask the questions

That is SOOO cool! I wish my parents would have allowed me to do that for 4-H Best of luck!!!

Jim Kurouski lives in Texas as do a few others who might be able to point you in the right direction. Jim can be contacted via his website (which has some great morelia info if you haven't run across it yet):

Anyways, hope this helps,

Thank you for your reply, hearing the confirmation on the cages makes me feel better. I figured I'd use an under the tank heater and a ceramic heat emitter. I like them better than heat lamps because there is no light to bother with and when it gets cold at night and I don't want to turn on the heater I can just leave the emitter on all night. Does this sound all right? or if there is anything else please let me know. Thanks!

Not bad, I use a simular set up myself during the cooler months (Cali doesn't really get cold). Just keep an eye on the heat during the warmer months (I'm sure you know that. Carpets in general can stand a little nightly dip in temps if need be).

Hello! Just wanted to write about my experience with my JCP. "Safari" is a wonderful pet!! I bought her at a reptile/fish store. She is a yearling and is growing. Almost 4 foot now.
I house her in a 40 gallon breeder size tank. I know she'll need a larger enclosure in the future. But for now she is happy.
I have an under the tank heater with a 100 watt basking light. At night she has a 75 watt red light. Lights are on timers. She loves her branches and hangs out on them often.
She also has 2 hide boxes, one on each side of the tank with a large water bowl. She eats small rats with no problems.
I decided to get a JCP because they are not a big big snake but bigger then corns. I also love the yellow/black color.
Hope you enjoy your JCP's as much as I do mine!

In my opinion I think Carpets are much easier than BP for a beginer. IMO
