I heard that Madagascar is no longer exporting reptiles...
can anybody credit or discredit this? it'd be great for the island but not so great for those wishing to expand the genepool for more seldom bred species.

To the best of my knowledge Madagascar is still wide open. A well known chameleon dealer on kingsnake still gets in shipments of wild import's from there so iassuming it's legal
I have read this too, however I know for a fact that reptiles are still being imported, as there are plenty of local shops that continually get supplies of Uro's in all the time.
Whether or not they are legal ... I have no idea.

While Madagascar is currently open to both the export of non-CITES (Uroplatus spp, millipedes, etc.) and CITES animals (chameleons, day geckos, Mantella spp.), it is known to "close" several times a year to CITES animals and occasionally non-CITES animals as well. You should have no difficultly obtaining the majority of the Uroplatus species during this time of the year, but I should warn you that the importation of cool weather species might affect their health and dramatically increase failure within the confounds of captivity. That’s why I waiting until Fall/Winter to purchase stock.
