Ray,
Ceftazidime is a third generation, cephalosporin antibiotic which has been used with good success in treating respiratory and other tissue infections in snakes. It has a broad spectrum of activity and is active against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It has a much lower level of toxicity and correspondingly wider margin of safety than the commonly used aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin, amikacin, and tobramycin. Additionally, it has been shown to be effective against some strains of bacteria that are resistant to these aminoglycosides. All in all it is a good choice for antibiotic therapy in snakes. Good luck with the treatment.
