Feeding problem

JBreding Mar 04, 2004 06:47 PM

I am by no means an expert in this, so forgive my lack of knowledge, but my son has a pet Kingsnake (San Luis something), and in the past month, it doesn't seem to be real interested in feeding. When we first got it, he would strike at the pinkie in our hand when we fed, then about a month ago, I would have to leave the pinkie in it's feeding cage and it would eat it after about 30 min. Now, for the last 2.5 weeks, it shows a total lack of interest in food. I've tried 6 different times to get it to eat, but it just won't take the mouse, nor does he seem interested in it, no matter how long I leave it. The reason we have the snake is we babysat a friend's snakes for a year while he was in Ireland, and he got it for my 3 yr. old son as a gift for doing this for him. He has told me to feed in a different cage (for lack of better term, sorry), than where he normally resides and since this problem started he said to pierce the mouse's head to create a scent, I would assume, so that might get the snake interested in eating. The snake just shed about 4 days ago, but an attempted feeding last night resulted in failure again. I need help, don't want my son's first pet to die because it won't eat. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know the habits of your snake, but my snake won't usually eat for about a week after shedding.

Sorry, guess I could have included a little more info. We got the snake July 2003 and were told at the time that it was 2 or 3 weeks old at that time (can't remember exactly). It's been eating a F/T pinkie weekly since we got him and this is the first time we've had an issue. I guess at what point should I get concerned, I can wait another few days, but then we'll be pushing a month with no food on a snake that is less than a year old.

I had that problem with my juvenile king for a while too, it went a month without eating at one point. Check the cage temps, make sure it's warm enough. A snake cant digest it's food if it's too cold.

What temp should the cage be? We have a heating pad under a pot that he climbs in and around, but it only covers about 1/4 of the aquarium. I've seen stuff on here about a basking light, do you think that might help?
