Picky African Rock

Rodan Mar 04, 2004 07:24 PM

Picked up a young female African Rock at a show last week, and been having some issues feeding her. Hasnt been too long yet, so not overly concerned, but just trying to make sure I have plenty of ideas for if I need to use them. So far I've tried fresh killed, F/T, and tried live tonight. Have tried both mice, and a rat. As far as I know, she's CB. Any suggestions?

If she's too small for a chick, then try a F/T drumstick. She'll need the bone for calcium, but muscle matter alone isn't a complete diet either. It's just something to start with so that you'll know what she'll fall for. If she takes the chicken, then next time rub the chicken on a rat before giving it to her. Do that a few times then try a F/T rat.
Or you could try a hide box, heating her up to 95 degrees, and cover her cage so she can't be distracted by the traffic outside the cage for a week, then try to feed her again.
Good luck, I've had 2 in my life and they are a great specie (if you get a tame one).

I too would say not to bother the snake for atleast a week and let it settle into its new home. Limit all exposure and do not try to handle it and interact with it. After a week, maybe two try once again to feed it and then see if it will eat. I wouldn't try to handle it untill after you have successfully gotten it to eat several times. After that you can try to start the handling process and everything should go fine. I would also post about this in the burmese forum. There are several keepers there that know a lot about Rocks. Anyway, good luck. Todd

Thanks a million, I'll keep everything in mind, and I'll try what you said about posting on the Burm forum.
