African Side Neck shedding...is this normal?

Justin M Jun 10, 2003 05:27 PM

I have a 1 year and 1/2 old African Side Neck and I have noticed that he has been peeling a lot. It is most on his neck but it is big chunks and it doesn't come off. It just hangs there. He seems very healthy besides this and he eats very well. I am feeding him a staple of pellets with calcium dusted crix once or twice a week, with a goldfish or 2 a day for exercise. I have a basking light and a uvb bulb. He is in a 40 gal breeder tank which is more ground room then high. Alright, I think that's it. Thanks in advanced,.

African sidenecks do seem to shed big patches of skin from time to time. But if it is always in this condition it might indicate a problem or vitamin deficiency.
Try giving it some natural sunlight or a good UV bulb over it's tank.
Also, I would not feed goldfish as they are linked to nutritional problems. Get another type of 'feeder' fish. Or you can get goldfish in advance and gut load them with high quality food before feeding them to the turtle.
