Snakes w/other pets in the house?

burninman921 Mar 04, 2004 11:17 PM

OK, I want a snake! Either a boa or ball python. However, my roommate has a cat. I'd like to have the snake "out and about" fairly often; will the snake try to eat (or just strike at) the cat (it's a pretty fat cat)? Not that I'd mind...I hate cats (cats=nature's furry moving targets).
But my room mate might be a bit mad

Obviously, I'd try to keep the stupid cat as far away from the snake as possible at all times...

Hope I didn't offend to many cat lovers

hey, i've got several boas...i also have a jack russel terrier, about the size of a cat. as long as you keep the dog/cat as far away as possible there shouldn't be any problems.

my dog trys to sniff the snakes when i have them out, my older tamer ones don't care, but my 1 year old boas aren't afraid to snap. either keep the cat out of the room that your in when holding the snake or let the cat learn.

I've got 3 cats, and on the few occasions when the snakes have gone exploring without my permission (ie:escaped their cages) the cats will mess them up and attack them. The cats also sit and glare at the cage whenever the snakes are up and about. Keep them seperated and all should be well.

A lot depends on the animal. My cat is always indoors, and spayed, so she is real mellow. She would not dare attack my snake.

However, my brothers cat is not spayed, and goes outdoors a lot. This cat is crazy and would probably kill my snake.

There you have it!

Thanks for the info everyone! I think I'll take trevorbennett's advice and let the kitty learn the hard way

Wait...it's a cat. That means it's CAN'T learn. Ah well...should be entertaining

I have a Ball Python and an Senagal Parrot both in my bedroom. I would imagine the bp could take down the parrot. The bp escaped once while I was cleaning the tank. It was missing for several days. I awoke one night to the parrot screaming it's head of. At first I rolled over and told the bird to shut up... until it dawned on me that the snake was still missing. I hauled a$$ out of bed over to the cage, tore the sheet off that I cover the bird at night with and found my bp wrapped around the cage trying to figure out how to get in. So I would image there could be a problem but only if your as stupid as I am and let your snake escape. I also would suggest washing your hands after you handle the bird if you will be handling the snake. Avoid any possible scents that could attract a bite.

Only thing that I'm aware of is a problem with cocker spaniels and poodles. Both are easily prone to a bacteria growing in their ears. I ran into a bout with RI almost a year ago and when the culture came back, the vet said "That's weird, the only time I've seen that bacteria is from cocker spaniels or poodles". Not so ironic, we have a cockapoo (cocker/poodle mix). Needless to say, the dog is NO LONGER allowed in the snake room
Best of luck,
