Obstruction problem??

Ophiophthalmos Mar 05, 2004 08:40 AM

I have a 4' albino corn snake. I raised it from about 18" to its present length. It has been eating and shedding regularly, but for several weeks now, it hasn't defecated. The rear part of its body appears fatter than the front part. It doesn't appear to be in any pain or discomfort.

What can be the problem? An obstruction? Should I try pumping some mineral oil down its throat?

I'm extremely fond of this snake.

If you want to try the mineral oil thing, it's must easier to inject it into a prey item. That way no one gets anything put down their throat. You don't have to use much oil, I've had 2 cc give me results on a young blood python.
I haven't had enough corn snakes to tell you if this is normal. Ok, I haven't had any corn snakes.

Thanks for the suggestion about the prey item. I'll try it.

I've had Corn snakes, yellow rats, grey rats and black rats and never had this happen before.

My old adult male BRS only goes every couple of weeks, but I think it should be different in a hatchling.

I'm not sure whats wrong but I've been afraid of the same thing with my corn. It hasn't gone as long as yours though. Does the last half of its body look darker on yours? If you find anything out, let me know! thanks.

No, it doesn't look darker, but its defnitely large at the posterior end. The front looks normal. I took the suggestion of the other poster. If that doesn't work, its to the vet for an x-ray.

The snake was about 18" when I got it. Its now close to 4 feet.
