Help please, somebody? WTF "doodoo" in water?

frog429 Mar 05, 2004 12:04 PM

Hi there,

I read on a website somewhere that if your tree frog starts to "poo poo" in their water dish, that is a sign of a potential problem? My frog this past week has done it 2 times in his dish. I should mention, I clean his water dish out every single morning and fill it with bottled, spring water. I have changed his substrate. I was using Bed a Beast, but it bothered me that he got so much in his mouth when going for the crickets.. I changed to Flucker "Reptimoss" which they state is ideal for frogs..I"m a tad concerned, as his gray water dish is now dyed green... from the moss..is it possible that the moss is dyed?? and its affecting my darling little friend? He eats well, but doesn't come out as much as he did.. he stays in his "log hole" until 7pm at night and is back in it by 7am in the morning.. he used to come out at 4 or 5pm...should I be concerned?? Otherwise, he seems healthy I've got his humidity around 65 - 70% and his temp is around 75 - 85 depending on time of day...

Hello to you. I've had White's for 2 years now, & have read tonnnnnnns of info on them, but take my advice for what you want. White's absolutely love their water dishes, and books often talk about the necessity of changing the water daily b/c 9 times out of 10 they poop in them, so you should relax because it doesn't indicate problems - it just happens to be where they are when they poop It's good that you clean it everyday, because they are quite messy between the pooping in the dish & dragging in the substrate! However, you should definitely stop using the bottled spring water, unless you treat it the same as tap water. Frogs "drink" by absorbing the water into their skin, so they also absorb any chemicals that are in the water. Tap water & bottled water contain very harmful chemicals for frogs, and you either need to buy a water treater (not necessary), or put your water in say a clean milk jug & let it sit for 24-48 hours. This allows all the chemicals to evaporate from the water, & it will be safe for your little friend. If I were you, I'd save a couple bucks on the bottled water & just let tap water sit out. Some people disagree on this because the bottled water doesn't have the hard calcium components that tap water does (which letting it set out gets rid of), but it can have high concentrations of other potentially harmful mineral deposits.
I use the same Fluker's substrate you do, & I haven't had any problems. Flukers is a really good reputable company, so I don't think it would be so popular if it had harmful dyes in it.
As for the time of when he starts to be active...my only suggestion is that the seasons are changing, & it's starting to get darker later. White's are nocturnal, so they come out when it's dark.

CivicChic,

Thank you so much for your advice! I didn't know that about the "pooping in their water bowls" makes me feel much better. I also think I had misunderstood what I read on that one website. They described "water stools" as signs of red leg..I realize that probably means..watery stools like diahrea. Not my little guy, he's got little pellet poops.

Enough about that..I was concerned about the water. I was told that Spring water was best to use! Yikes! I've been using it for 2 months! I'll just start using the tap and letting it sit out like you suggest.. I want my little buddy around for a long time.. I even stopped handling him, because I read it stresses them out..(he's so cute though! and feels so awesome sitting on my hand or shoulder)... anyhow.. Thanks for yourwebsite, I'll definitely check it out!

No problem. White's are so hardy, so I'm sure he'll be around for quite some time...

I totally agree with CivicChick. WTF love their water bowls. I have also had WTF for 4 years. Mine love their water bowl. I have three water bowls for them that I change daily too. Letting water sit out for 24-48 hrs. is what I do. I also put drops in the water that add extra slim coating. I wouldn't worry about your little guy pooping in his water bowl. Throughout different seasons my male comes out at different times too. My female comes out during the day more than my male.
