First Day Home

mr_velocity Mar 05, 2004 12:12 PM

I've been through the care sheets but I couldn't find mention of a beardies first day home. I've also seen mention of keeping a new beardie seperated from the rest of the animals for a while. But, for the first beardie, what should be done when it is frist brought home, even the first week. With our dogs and horse they saw a vet, do I need to do this with a beardie? Is there any preventitive medicine I should give for worms or parasites?
If there is anything I need I want to make sure I have it on hand when the beardie arrives. Other than food and housing.

I quarentine any new animal for 90 days, just a precautionary measure for the safety of my collection. Get an appointment at the vet for a wellness check and a fecal exam. He may go off his feed for a day or two until he get used to his new suroundings, might want to limit stress during this period also. That's about it, they usually take it quite well.

You can take it to a vet just like you would a dog or horse, also bring in a fresh stool sample for testing to detect parasites. Other than that, just leave it alone in it's cage for a week or two, just offer food once or twice a day (more often if young). It may not eat much for the first couple days till it gets used to it's new home. It is also good to not try and handle it during the first week or two then gradulately start holding him for a few minutes a day till he calms down and is comfortable in your hands.
