quarintine tips

thegeckobarn Mar 05, 2004 12:33 PM

I just wanna make sure im quarintining my geckos correctly. I go by what most people have said, to quarintine for 3 months and check for any signs of illness along the way.

But anyway, is there anything else people do? I know I have to wash my hands after handling anything from any of my tanks before going to another tank. But does anyone have any other recommendations?
Is it absolutely necessary to keep the geckos in a separate room? Or can they be housed in a separate tank in the same room, but without coming in contact with one another? Are some illness's/diseases airborne? What about crypto or coccidia? Any signs to watch out for with these?

How many times do you clean your quarintine cages a week? And what types of chemicals do you use, vinegar, soap, water, etc?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated, just wanna make sure im doing my 100% best to keep my geckos healthy!

I use a 1 part bleach in 10 parts water solution for all tanks regardless of quaranteen or not. Different food dishes is a must, and I try to use different sinks to clean them in (so the quaranteen stuff gets cleaned in the downstairs bathroom, and the normal stuff is cleaned in the upstairs bathroom).

I've also tried using a spray bottle and ethyl alcohol and just spraying down the tank and wiping but it seems to leave a bitter tasting residue (taste fingers after spraying and the alcohol dries and you'll know what I mean), so I stopped doing that and just bleach and scrub down with Joy.

Getting a fecal done is nice too, since it'll tell you if there are any bugs present already, and you can know that if your gecko does get sick it's probably not due to a parasite and more a virus/bacteria thing, but you won't know for sure unless you get another fecal done. I do it anyway (one immediate after I get the gecko, or any animal for that matter, and right before the gecko graduates from quarenteen to "house pet" status) since they're cheap where I go ($10) and it gives me a little ease of mind to know my new gecko isn't crawling with bugs.

Hope that helps, good luck.
