Breeding tips

Andy1982 Mar 05, 2004 01:01 PM

I have a female that is about 1 1/5 years old. I have recently done research and have taken an interest in breeding dragons. She is healthy and is about 17 inches long right now. My roommate has a male that is about 2 1/5 years old. He is about 19 inches long or a little more. My question is, if i were to mate these two, how long should i put the two together. Should i just put them together until i see them do thier thing? or should i leave them together until i see or feel eggs in the female?? Or should i keep them together until the eggs are layed and i see some fertilized??? If anyone could give me some advice, i would appreciate it, thank you!

Hi
place them in the cage who is the biggest in space !!
redisigned it so it looked strange terrorority to both !!
then you wil see the male wil give a black beard and will headbobbed!!
the female wil wave with arms back.
also she can give a submisve head bobbed back little bit.
then the male wil bite in neck and try to mate .
then after 3,4 weeks you can expect eggs!!
one mating gave give you several clutches from the 2,3 to even 8 times she can lay eggs!!
she can store the sperm and released it when she want to.
so the male not have to be whole the time in the cage!!
its betetr to remove him after you see they mated !!
becuase he wil be anoying to her and can be stresfull.
it also could be he calms down and be relaxed.
but mosat of the time the male wil go on and on and on and on !!
they even stop eating and only think about the females and runn around whole day
i hope this storie helps you abit

well first off the eggs are fertilized INSIDE the female, you dont wait until the eggs are laid to be fertilized. And also, please research before you breed, usually you dont make any profit on breeding them. You need to ready for up to 30 hatchlings and must have housing for everyone, 5 hatchlings per container. And even then, the female will lay more clutches, leading to at least 60+ hatchlings that you need to have housing for, correct lighting for, and supplements for, let ALONE food. These guys will eat thousands of crickets a week, plus you need the greens. Besides just the caring for, youll need to find homes for everyone, and that is often hard to do. You will often become desperate and sell for very little, losing money on the venture. And as yo7u are looking for homes for the little guys, they will be getting bigger, needing more room and fewer hatchlings per housing unit. It can be a very expensive venture. Do Research before jumping into this. Make sure you have the finances.

That aside, here is what i do. After they go out of brumation, i put them on the floor and see if the female is ready. If she is, i leave them alone, but watch just in case the male gets aggressive. And i wait. If i notice them breeding, i wait until its done and i put them both in their seperate cages. Within 2 weeks she will get restless and will need an egglaying box with 1/2potting soil and 1/2 sand, moist enough so it wont cave in. You will then need an incubator to keep them in at about 80-85 degrees F. During the gravid time (when she is carrying the eggs) give her as much as she will eat and keep her hydrated and make sure she gets LOTS of calcium. After she lays make sure she eats and gets hydrated and gets a lot of calcium in her, and do this every few hours after laying until you feel comfortable.

G'luck
Dave
