Turtle up in VA!

StephF Mar 05, 2004 02:35 PM

One of our guys popped up today....it's been really warm the last few days, so I've been on the lookout. We'll probably see more over the weekend as the warm weather trend continues.
Very exciting!

Where abouts in VA? I live in Norfolk. Over the past few days we have seen some painteds, redbellies, and some red ears out basking. We even saw a few yearlings out. Can't wait till spring!!

hey guys, i'm in warrenton. i found a wild box turtle the other day. too bad it was ill, i took it to a rehabber. also been finding lots of old box turtle shells, odd. things are definitely moving, but i think its supposed to be cool this week. in the meantime a lot of the amphibians are out, and the painteds are out in force. already pulled a big female off the road today. near the top of the list to see while i was in VA was to see wood turtles. yup, i fulfilled that one today. lol spotted turtles are next. if anyone is in my area and likes to field herp, maybe we can get together.

Hey, guys,
I'm in Central VA, the turtle in question is in the enclosure we built in our yard. I figured someone would be stirring soon, since I'd seen a couple of garter snakes in the last couple of days.
Thanks for the offer, Ian: I wish night classes weren't keeping me so busy, since what you're doing sounds like a blast.
Keep giving us updates!

I'm really jealous!! Here in Michigan, even as we speak, it is snowing!! blah!

Since temps are dropping into the 30's again tonight, we decided to "tuck him back in": he had camped out under some leaves, but now is back where he can burrow down again if he needs to.
Kind of fun to see one of them up again after long months of waiting...
It probably won't be til next month sometime that they come up and really stay up.

I know how you feel. I live up in Gaylord and we'll probably have snow for at least another month. Where abouts in MI are you?

I'm in Lowell, near G.R. We got real cold and had another snow storm tonight! *sigh*
