buying a reptile

animalkeeper Mar 05, 2004 03:09 PM

Over the past couple years, i have wanted a pet reptile. As of now, i have 2 green anoles and 2 leopard Geckos coming from a private breeder. I also want a Chameleon, but i understand they do not like to be handled. Is this just a certain type of Chameleon or all of them?

Every breed of chameleon doesn't like to be handled. Some are a little (note little) better than others. I believe Panthers are a little better, but you'll find that even spraying them will make them upset.

Just be sure you do research on the types of cages available. Don't necessarily take the advice of a pet store-NO glass cages at ALL.

Good luck!

Yea chameleons arent really the type of reptile to handle much, it just causes a lot of stress. I like them as really good display reptiles with a nice cage setup and automatic misters. The leopard geckos are better for handling for sure (although I don't like to handle my breeder geckos much).

Hi - glad you are inquiring before buying - many people don't. If you are looking for a herp that you can handle I think bearded dragons are best (I don't have any, but it is what I hear). Chams in general are not touchy-feely critters at all. They are also high maintenance. I have linked you to an article on cost, requirements, etc.

There are also a few sites that we (forum posters) highly recommend. If after you read up on these and other responses to your initial question you still think you want one please feel free to continue to ask. This is by far one of the friendliest and helpful forums on the subject (and ACTIVE- whew!). I found them a year ago and never left
