How do you tell if your leo is blind?

ginny23 Mar 05, 2004 04:45 PM

I have an albino leo that I suspect may be blind. There is no obvious eye problem (cosmetically) but her behavior concerns me. I have never actually seen her eat altho she must be eating her mealies bc she maintains weight and continues to shed. Im concerned because whenever i go to her tank while she is out and i make a noise or she can tell im near she tries to find her hide but cant. She runs around bobbing and poking her head in the air all over the tank until she finds the opening of her cave. It resembles a person walking through the dark with their hand out trying to find a light switch. This can sometimes take up to 5 mins and she gets more intense as she takes longer and longer. If i feed her crix she runs around like crazy often running right into the glass or plants never eating one. When mealies are placed in her dish she walks all over the tank and i think she may be looking for them. Is there any sort of test...like with her pupils where i can confirm this? Also if she is blind, how can i make feeding more easy for her without force feeding...she is skittish of me. Sorry if this sounds dumb to you.

Try to place a mealie dish in one place and keep it at that one place, so the leo will remember. Mine sit and wait by their dishes when its around feeding time.
you should prolly watch her eat as well, even if she is gaining weight. And prolly stay away from crix, mealies are more "idot proof" for them. My older leo can't catch a crix if it's lose her in cage worth a damn.
good luck
