Planning a grey band quest

scales Mar 05, 2004 04:51 PM

I'm from the frozen upper penninsula of michigan. I only get to go herping 3 months out of the year. Have decided to spend some time this summer looking for greybands. Any suggestions on states, counties, locals, dates, times, equipment? Also, I think it would be fun to meet up with other herpers when I go... As soon as classes are over!!!!

Well,
You have to be in Texas to find grey bands, you are not allowed to collect in New Mexico. A good county to go to would be val verde and terrel counties on high way 90 between comstock and sanderson. Another good road to hunt in north of comstock on highway 167 (juno road). If you would like additional info on good places, go to the alterna page link on the top of the greyband forum. Good times are from early april to september, maybe even october. I've heard that the best weather conditions are a day time temp between 85-90 and night time between 65-80. Weather conditions are best if it has rained a few days prior or if a storm front is on its way (i.e. low barrometer reading).
Hope this helps,

Any suggestions on states......

I suggest you limit your searching to Texas, since they are protected in NM (where you would have to be pretty damn lucky to find one anyway) and you can't bring them back from Mexico.
