reticulated are protected in Texas, and would be illegal. Anyway if it is collaris (most likely lizard to be found in the pet trade), it will have two dark spots on both sides of the vent (the butt)...one on the left, and one on the right side. If it is male, it will not. Probably won't help you if you are a first timer and have nothing else to compare it to.
Lots of yellow on the head is somewhat indicative of a male.
