? about eggs

kevintat2 Mar 05, 2004 09:39 PM

On Feb 27th My female layed 7 eggs. 6 clumped together and 1 on its own. I put them in the incubater at 89. Controled by a helix thermastat. The egg that was not attached, had a window on the egg that seaped, a day or two later, it began to smell. I figured it was bad, so i removed it. I cut the egg to see if there was a baby in it, and all that was in the egg was white goo. Now 3 more eggs are doing the same thing. 3 on the bottom are nice and white, but are still soft to the touch. What i'm wondering is, do you think the eggs on the bottom are good, or are they going to do the same thing? I am wondering if they are infertile.

Right off I would say the humidity is too low. Again just a guess but the fact the bottom eggs are doing good and I'm sure they are the ones touching the substrate and are probably picking up enough moisture from that. The other may be drying out. What type of incubator are you using? is it heating from the top or bottom? I had this problem using a havobator (? spelling) until I modified it and put the heating element under the egg boxes. What substrate are you incubating the eggs in?

That will tell you right away. No question.

A couple of years ago I had a female lay 9 eggs and 2 slugs. The eggs were beautiful and appeared perfect in every way. I always candle our eggs to check for fertility once I am in our incubator. I soon discovered that although 5 of the eggs looked good, they were in fact infertile. We were left with 4 good eggs.

I use a small Maglite flashlite to candle our eggs. I turn the lights off and hold the flashlight flush against the egg. If you see veins, the egg is fertile. In this case I did not see any veins which meant that they were duds. This is what I suspect is your situation.

Better luck next time.

I candled the eggs, and no veins.
