stinkbugs?

FL_gator Mar 05, 2004 11:10 PM

Anyone know if stinkbugs are toxic to chams? I just caught one outside my apartment, and judging by the stink it's letting off, it's probably not a good idea to feed, but i may give it a shot if it won't kill him

yeah, they do stink, huh? As you can probably guess this is a defense mechanism. Your cham may not like it as the "juice" they produce is also not palatable. I do know that on some people this can cause a rash so I would not risk it. it's a good idea to avoid any insects that produce a fluid defense mechanism - blister beetles and bombadier beetles in particular.

Be careful feeding your cham bugs you catch outside in an urban (or even suburban) environment, period. No telling what chemicals or trash that thing (or any bug in an urban area) has tromped through. If you do feed wild caught bugs to your cham, I suggest taking a drive into the country and netting some "field plankton". Make sure there has been no pesticide sprayed in the area.

even the "country" can be risky. I live in rural NH and some towns spary for west nile virus (fortunately mine does not) and they do it at night.
