american alligator anatomy question???

on the bottom jaw towards the back of the mouth there are little slits in which little blackish grey "knob" things pop out every now and again.

what are they?

i beleive they are use to release some chemical. either for mating purpose or territory purpose. its a chemical scent of some sort.
