calm down??

shadow4108 Mar 06, 2004 12:17 AM

I have a beardie I just purchased, when I bought him he was very calm, would let me hold him anytime. Within a few days he got very skittish.. he has to be chased down to be held, or i have to wait until he is cooler after the heat lamp goes off. I have always heard that beardies are very tame and tolerate handling well, hes about 5 months old. Will he calm down? Or will I be chasing him forever. I dont think hes afraid of me, I hand feed him something daily, even if its just something from his greens, and he takes them readily. If he will calm down how long will it take?

His orginal calm might of been a frozen fear reflex. Shipping can be very tramatic for our little buddies. You can expect a couple of mo's of fear if you work with him evey day. With Mine I put her tank at my desk so that we get to look at each other a lot and I handeled her for short periods 3 times a day at least. 4 or more on weekends. She calmed down after 1 month but if a sudden noise sends her into a panic. I gently cup my hand over her eyes, When she can not see, she holds still so than I can calm her. Thanks for the advice. Although I can't recall there ever being an accident.. I've always been gentle with him, Hes never fallen or been dropped or had anything bad happen while being held. The only thing I can think of that would explain the original calmness is that he was cold. I bought him from the breeder direct, and carried him home in a container, so I know there were no problems being shipped. I'm thinking maybe a few weeks/months of being handled while he is cooler at night, would help to establish a bond. I'm hoping he will calm down as he gets older.
