I am using Mazuri 5M30 rodent feed, its for breeder rats. $25 for 50lbs.

I get the same results with my dog food and grain mixes with an added bit of greens every couple days. Its cheaper too than $25 for 50 lbs.. I can get 3 months worth of feed for less than $30 the way I do it... and that ends up being over 150 lbs of feed when mixed. I buy 1 50 lb bag of wild bird/squirrel mix... it has peanuts.. sunflower seeds and corn in it. I buy one 50 lb bag of wheat or rolled oats and one 50 lb bag of Dad's or ol'roy or Pets Pride dog food. This lasts 3 months.. sometimes longer depending on how much my colony has fluctuated and produced in terms of weaning pups.. Every litter I have is between 11 and 17 pups... Most are 12 or 13.. I have 4 females that routinely drop 16 pups and 8 other females that will vary by one or two pups.. usually over what I normally expect of them. I've been feeding my rats this same mix for years now.. Eve my gerbils get this mix and thrive on it...when I'm breeding them. My whol colony was recently killed off by cats but I'm working on selective breeding for a larger litter.. going back to that when I can get my breeding project back in swing. I had a bloodline where the gerbils dropped 8 pups routinely... which is way upper size range for gerbils. The usual is between 3 and 6. I have to start all over on that now though. It sucks.

Lucien

Do you feed on screen, in hoppers or in dishes? I found that when I fed in dishes there was a lot of waste. One of the reasons I fed in hoppers was to minimize waste. My rats would routinely empty the dish and tuck every thing away in the litter.

I feed in metal dishes.. the only things they actually take from the dish and try to hide is the dog food... and the peanuts from the bird/squirrel mix...Though when I change cages I never find any wasted mostly because I give them a certain amount every day... about 32 ounces...usually increase to 40 ounces if I have alot of nursing mothers... but they get fed and watered daily. I have very little waste mostly because I experiment until I found the right amount to keep them fat and happy.
