i took aflac to the vet and...

...he does have an infection in his feet. it is apparently due to not shedding right between his toes. the solution? antibiotics. the vet has started injecting him...7 injections, 1 every three days. he might lose a couple more toes.

the medicine: amiglyde.

the vet told me that injection is the best way to administer antibiotic because you know and can make sure he is getting a complete dose every time. tanya from totallygecko (who has been a great help--thank you) has suggested that injections are very stressful on geckos and that she and her vet agree that oral antibiotics are the way to go. i would prefer to give oral antibiotic, if only for the reason that i don't want to have to take aflac outside every three days--it is still winter up here in maine...but i want to make sure he gets the right amount of medicine. what do you all think? heres his picture again:

thanks,

amanda

Did you discuss your concerns with your vet? I would believe that he has your animals best interest at mind. I would also ask the price difference between each treatment. He Might be trying to get you into the office. If the price difference is nill or minimum I would take your vets advice.

i didn't discuss them with him at the time. i didn't think of it. do you think i should mention it on monday when i go back to get the second dose? i mean, isn't it already too late?

he did tell me that i could do the injections myself at home and that the price was the same if i wanted to do that or bring him in and get him done and i don't feel comfortable sticking needles into my babies forearms so i opted for him to do it. i dunno. it cost $7 per injection--so $49 total for the meds. how much does the oral stuff cost?

thanks,

amanda

I think $50 dollars for 7 vet visits is more than fair and I would continue on that path. As far as it being to late to discuss it with the vet, I think if you wanted you could call any time to discuss your animals treatment that they will hear you out and form their treatment around what they feel is best for the animal.

prepared the dose for me and taught me how to administer the follow-up shot myself. I was nervous and would rather have brought him in but the follow up was due over the weekend when my vet was not in the office, and so I learned it and did it for the sake of my gecko. Though I was worried about it, I managed fine. Though the treatment was not successful and on consultation with another vet I was told that the dosage every three days was not frequent enough...the admijistration of the shot itself was not a problem
