just a rant

Doesn't anyone buy a book anymore. This forum is pretty good but there is another about iguanas that has gotten really bad. I follow it on occasion cuz I had green igs for about 30 yrs. Anyways, the questions just amaze me, things like "I just bought 2 igs what should I feed them. I'm going to get a lizard real soon what should I get, I want it to be like a dog."" the tanks all set up ,what should I put in it" I noticed that there is a real turnover in the regulars on that forum. I wonder if its 'cause the same ignorant question is asked over and over again. I just hate people wanting to be spoon fed information with no visible homework done on their part.
This has nothing to do with anyone here. I guess I am curious if anybody else has noticed the trend on these kinds of forums. Maybe you have read this and said "duh". I am happy to help, or I wouldn't be here but wouldn't it be nice if they met you half way.
Now I feel better, thanks- its been slow here...

I couldnt agree with you more. I've have seen these general posts your talking about. It's so easy to get the information you need through the net. People need to investigate a little more themselves. It's the questions beyond the basic caresheets that should be asked here. But on the other side of it there's many different people on this forum at different levels. So I think everyone plays there part accordingly. Newbies usually answer other newbies posts. The more experienced people I think are a bit more picky about which posts they will answer based on what direction they want to take the hobby since they are the ones defining it. I think they wont waste there time on frivolous questions because they dont want those type of people giving the hobby a bad name. My take anyway at the moment.......

Joel, I can't agree with you more. I've been a regular over there for about 5 years and I think I'm probably one of the last "old timers" to still be hanging around. I was certain that the one poster you mentioned was a troll until he became persistant. That's the kind of person that really shouldn't own an iguana...but who can be that judgemental on a public forum? Now they plan on getting two because they are only $20! OY!! Cindy (Faust) was working on a FAQ for the iguana forum...so that newbies could read that and get answers to simple care questions before coming to the forum. I think she still plans on getting it up there. I've noticed the same kind of apathy for research on the monitor forum but, unfortunately, if you show ignorance there you get pounced on and torn to shreds. The Tegu forum is a nice place.
It has been slow here. Here's a photo of a current boarder, Damien the Nile monitor. He was originally adopted from us late last summer and has come back to visit while his owner is moving. Wonderful animal!! It's nice to have him back for a while.

I knew I would hear from you cuz I do see your posts. That is a great Nile. I saw it on the monitor forum. I get a kick out of the intolerance on that forum so i occasionally check out the longer threads. I dont want a monitor but they are facinating to me.
thanks for letting me see it again

Well Jane,

People like that are what keep us in business. If it werent for people like that imagine our boring days and lack of phone calls. And of course I wouldnt have little monkey pox in quarentine for a week before I can adopt him out! I do think however I need a new name.

As for the iguana FAQ.... Ill have to see if it is up yet (never really paid attention) because it is done and ready to go.

I think on any of these forums where people can post about herps costing under $30.00 ie: green iguanas, frogs, newts, bearded dragons ect., you get the "people who shouldn't own herps" crowd.
They impulse buy that $7.00 green iguana, newt, frog, ect. and then try to find out how to care and feed it. I am guilty of doing this in the past also, but I did my own research on care, and didn't do the "duhh what do i feed it!" on a forum. Although I will have to do it on a fish forum for some baby lungfish given to me.
Anyway, cyclura and ctenosauras usually cost over $100 per lizard ($100 plus for cteno's and around $300 plus for cyclura. Usually if someone is going to drop that kind of money for a lizard, they are usually pretty serious and do research before buying. I egged on the web master to start this forum 2 or 3 years ago because I was sick of the iguana forum repeated crap, and what in the hell is an "iguana awareness day" forum!?! I've been real happy with the people this forum has atracted, even though an occasional goof ball gets in. Anyway, that is my 2 cents worth.
