new savannah monitor question

savfan Mar 06, 2004 11:25 AM

I just got a savannah montior yesterday it is about 14 in long head to tail and is a little on the skinny side . The behavior I wanted to ask a question about is the eating habits when I first got it home it ate 2 pinkies and 15 crickets so I put the same thing in there today knowing that savannahs are big eaters and it is very lethargic and is just letting the crickets climb all over it. I was just wondering if this behavior is common for the acclimation period? if anyone could help me out I would appreciate it.

What are his temps? If his temps are not warm enough then he won't properly digest.

100 ambient air temp and 110 basking spot

100 ambient is far too high. He needs a place to get colder than that. They prefer a body temp lower than 100, and it's impossible to obtain with the ambient being 100.

I am far from being an expert on savannahs but I was given a very unhealthy lizard. I would first check the temps then make sure he has a hiding place, mine will lay down flat and not move when he's caught in the open, you know like a kid, if I can't see you, you can't see me.
