Mealies for pacman.

Goblin-Gecko14 Mar 06, 2004 11:36 AM

SHould I feed normal mealies for my 2 in horned frog or the bigger zoophobas. He eats about every other day 1 or two normal mealies and I dont know if that fills him up so should I go to zoophobas. Also is it ok to put him on a paper towel substrate to avoid impaction even though I use tongs.

I'm not sure but I'll bet your frog will start to eat crickets sooner or later. Is he scared of them? About zophobas they can bite back, so maybe you could smash their heads first (Sounds cruel, I know :P) or kill them. They do not only contain chinin but they are also higher in fat. Maybe just try feeding crickets for a while, if not maybe try earthworms or nihgtcrawlers? I do NOT consider my self an expert so you may want to wait for some more answers before you do anything.

Good Luck!

I have a picky pac-man as well but, I have found if I hold the crickets (with tongs)up right over his nose he then will eat them. Sometimes he still refuses and I still have to feed him a pinky.

Tongs are a great option as the frog will begin associating the tongs w/ food & will snap at them no matter what you're holding in the tongs.

i am sorry for saying pinkies, i all ways confuse pinkies and mealies because its sounds the same my fault because i know that a 2 inch horned frog should never be eating pinkies, but anyway i have important news for you. MY cousin is a herpetculturest specializing in snakes, but he has had a lot of experience with horned frogs, but lets cut to the chase i was telling him about how i occasionally feed my horned frog mealies, and he told me to stop right away because mealies are "herp killers!" If you decide to keep feeding your frog mealies make sure that he is chewing them because it is known now that if a herp does not chew mealies and instead he swallows them whole, they are now noted to eat there way out of yourherp is ingested whole,i suggest maybe chopping their heads off before feeding them because if you don't you are taking the chance of have your frog killed due to a mealie eating its way out of their stomachs!!! Just to let you know i stoped completly feed my horned frog mealies once i herd this!

do you really think a mealie can survive in stomach acids? there is no way mealies can survive the stomach acids of herps. Did your cousin tell you that mealies can eat their way out of herps? if he did he has no clue of what he is talking about.
