Hi Terry!
Nice animal!
Hey, I don't want to appear like a know-it-all, but the name "tenebrosa" does not refer to a locality. It is the latin word for dark or gloomy and refers to the color variation for this E. dione. That's why it is normally just appended to the species name as in Elaphe dione "tenebrosa". I believe this name was given to this variation by Sergei Ryabov, but I don't know if he intended it to be a "place holder" for a future subspecies assignment (I can ask him if you need to know), or just to signify the color variation.
Sacha
At present momen we use word "tenebrosa" for designation of patternles color variation. We also have chessboard-like pattern variation (see foto), which i call "chess".
PS. I send you fotos of my E. hohenackeri soon, mr. Korell. This is not available for me yet and i'm sorry for delay.

Thank you for the clarification, Ivan. I knew it had something to do with the color variation, but I'm not good at Latin so I looked it up in a dictionary and tenebrosa=dark made also sense to me since this patternless strain is usually dark.
Very interesting pattern, the checkered dione.
I'm looking forward to the pictures when you have the opportunity to take some, and to exchange more information regarding E. hohenackeri.
Thanks,
Sacha
PS: I wish your website was in English
Sasha,
no problem
I send you some of my tenebrosa foto or post it here, if you wish. I dont see any patch of pattern on it, but...
About hohenackeri - i dont success yet. One of my males was active yesterday and hunt for female, but they is dont ready. Some of female in first shed for now, i hope that after it all will be ok.
We will create site of Exotarium and planning English version, but we have no time. We in permanent deadline

Thanks for the additional clarification for "tenebrosia". It looks like you have an impressive collection from your list Ivan. Good luck.

Hi Sacha -
Nice to see you post. Thanks for clarifying the name tenabrosia. It does seem at times that in Europe and Asia that color and pattern variations of a species is also associated with locale. I've seen where someone will post a stripped situla and associate the stripped situla to a locale and/or what part of the range. Some of the other color variations in diones are associated with range locale. I appreciate your explanation and help with regard to my post. You can step in and clarify and help my posts anytime Sacha. I really like diones. Good luck.

Terry,
I must say you've built up quite a nice collection of Elaphe in past three years. You should start seeing the fruit of your labor this year with almost all of them right?
I wish I had another work related project out west again so that I could come and visit you again to see all of your animals, have another Buffalo burger in Tehachapi, and go snake hunting
Sacha
Sacha -
Thanks for the comments. I've been fortunate to acquire some nice snakes that I wanted to work with. I was lucky to have met several quality people like yourself to help me in that direction while enjoying working with the snakes I get. You are correct, a big part of my collection hits their breedable year this season.
I was hoping you had another project or two out this way that needed your presence. You make me hungry mentioning the Buffalo Burgers in Tehachapi. It was great herping with you when you were out here. I also learned a lot from you.
I'm planning to eventually make it to Daytona this year for the show. Take care.

Patternless Tenebrosa origin from Eastern Kazakstan. I dont think that S. Ryabov (my chief) associated it with locale.
Striped variation of E. situla origin from island Milos.
Such dione variation as Chersky and Chinensis associate with locale, you right. But other - not. I have near 20 different color variation of E. dione and dont associate it with locale, but with it color or pattern variation. If you interested, i can post some foto of my dione.

Thanks for the explanation. That would be great if you would post a couple pics of your diones. I don't get tired of looking at diones. I have a pair of C. China diones and 2 pairs of South Korean diones in addition to the dione "tenebrosia" and anohter trio I have. It looks like you have an interest in the obsoleta complex. E.o. deckerti are one of the obsoletas I like a lot.

Beste Sascha Korrel,
Indeed thanks a lot about the remark about "Tenebrosa". I am starting a site about diones. About a yar ago I have mailed you about Diones. Do you know someone who has Diones?
