HELP Crested lost a foot!

Aeromeggy Mar 06, 2004 03:45 PM

Oh my god! So I just posted about getting a new crested. I went back out to get more plants for the new tank, and when I was setting them up I noticed my original crested C.J. is missing one of her back feet! I thought at first the other gecko bit her but it definitely looks burned. She has one toe, one that looks just gray (like ash), and the others are completely gone. She can't use it. She can still crawl on the leaves and ok on the side of the tank. Should I just use burn ointment? Should I do anything else? Their substrate is paper towels. I have a red bulb on 24 hours a day, and I think she might have burned her foot on the top of the cage (it was hot from the bulb). I feel terrible

Sorry to hear that.
I'm a newbie. Maybe your other crested bit it off, if the missing foot is nowhere to be found.

That was my first thought, but the foot definitely loks singed, like it was burned.

Sorry to hear that. You really dont need a light for the cresteds, I dont use any for my geckos and they are great. Growing and eating like crazy. you can put some neosporin on the gecko. Good luck

I use the light because I keep the temperature in my house in the 60's, so I got the low wattage red bulb to keep their temperature in the 70's. I am not planning on using it in the summer.

I had an anole a long time ago (back before I knew anything about keeping them) who lost both front feet---kinda like you described, the stubs looked asy. I figure he burned them on the heat rock (I know, I know--I was 7)...but except for not being able to climb the glass he never seemed to notice and was able to eat and move around fine and lived for a long time after. I'd be worried about putting anything on that they might lick and ingest in case it was toxic, but I guess on a back foot that is less likely

Thanks everyone for the advice. She is climbing the walls, just with 3 feet instead of 4. She seems to be doing well...I'll let you know how everything turns out.

sorry to hear that.

how about bringing her to a vet?

The animal likely had stuck shed on her toes, which ended up cutting off circulation and effectively killing her toes.

Sounds like you need to watch your humidity.

The reason it is black where the toes came off is because that tissue is dead.

I've seen it a million times with Iguanas in pet stores, and a friend of mine recently had that happen with a baby Crested Gecko that he produced.
